眨眼间，两个孩子长破了2026的关口。作为一个中年人，我对未来的世界充满了疑问。尤其在最近越发风云突变的年代，作为一个父亲，我对怎么向孩子解释这个世界，充满了犹豫......

2026年的第一周，孩子的学校给家长发了一封信，信中所述，颇为让人深思感触，我就拿来和大家分享一下。因为我相信，喜欢这个空间的粉丝，应该都有开放深邃的胸襟。

我(校长)不太热衷于制定新年计划的人，相信我肯定是学校的少数派。我已经听到不少同事分享了他们令人钦佩的宏伟目标，也期待日后听到关于跑马拉松、完成小说写作以及编织技艺精进的捷报。尽管如此，Bird 先生还是在开学大会上带来了一些值得深思的内容，他分享了假期阅读的一本短小却有力的书：历史学家 Timothy Snyder 所著的On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century。

这本书从二十世纪的历史经验中提炼出二十条教训，既是警示，也是引导。Bird 先生重点谈及了其中几条尤为引人共鸣的内容。

这是本学期发人深思开端，也再次提醒我们，教育不仅关乎考试成绩和结果，更关乎培养那些在走出校园之后，依然影响深远的思维习惯与处世方式。

如果说新年是一个许愿的时刻，那么这些更为内敛的抱负——更细心地阅读、更批判地思考，以及更用心地对待彼此——无疑是值得长期坚持目标。

I have never been much one for New Year’s resolutions, a position which I know places me firmly in the minority at school. I have already heard colleagues share admirably ambitious plans, and I look forward to future reports of marathons run, novels written, and crochet skills perfected. That said, Mr Bird provided some thoughtful food for reflection in his start-of-term assembly, drawing on a short but powerful book he read over the holiday:On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Centuryby the historian Timothy Snyder.

The book sets out twenty lessons drawn from the twentieth century, intended as warnings as well as guides. Mr Bird focused on a small number that felt particularly resonant. One was about language: the importance of thinking carefully about the words we use, resisting easy slogans, reading widely, and stepping back from the constant noise of online discourse. Another was about truth: that a shared commitment to facts, reason and critical thinking is essential if freedom and accountability are to endure. A third stressed the value of investigation, curiosity and independent enquiry, especially in a world where misinformation can spread quickly and convincingly. Finally, there was a reminder of the power of everyday human interaction: making eye contact, speaking kindly, engaging in small talk, and building connections. These are small acts that help sustain trust and empathy within communities.

It was a thoughtful way to begin the term, and a reminder that education is not only about examinations and outcomes, but also about developing habits of mind and ways of being that matter well beyond School. If the start of a new year is a moment for resolutions, then these quieter ambitions (to read more carefully, to think more critically, and to attend more closely to one another) feel like ones well worth holding on to.
